Is this secondhand DSLR camera worth buying?
-
This is the seller's description. "Canon EOS 10D Digital SLR Current bid: $350.00 Megapixels: 6MP I purchased this camera new in 2003 to travel around the world. It has been a great camera to own and use. The build quality is stunning being a huge step up over the plastic EOS 300D. The shutter was replaced by Canon NZ after it failed in 2004 and I have had no problems with it since. Included with the package is - EOS 10D Camera - Canon Software disk - Neck Strap - 2xBP511 Batteries - 1xBP512 Battery (same capacity different shape) - USB Cable - RCA Cable - Manuals - Original Box - 512mb compact flash card The camera is in good condition."

Answer:
A 10D is way too old to pay anything more than $100 for what's being offered - it doesn't even come with a lens. I wouldn't even pay $100 for it, that's the sort of thing that gets traded for an xbox or something. That isn't a package, it's what came with the camera. If you are flat broke and you absolutely need a camera, than sure go ahead. But if you can add another $300, you can get a camera that is far more advanced with double the resolution, with a lens. P.S. My D80 isn't worth $350, and it's a better camera. A dealer offered me $270 for it, if I upgraded. Older digital technology isn't worth crap these days. Film cameras actually hold better value. So there you go.

Personally, i would not get it. It's basically been six years since that camera was introduced- and Manufacturers made many changed to the Digital SLR in those years. Modern technology in Cameras, is much more efficient, and practical than the Camera technology in 2003. My suggestion is that you should keep on saving your money, until you can afford the Canon 30d, or better yet a Canon 40d. I own a Canon 30d, and trust me, it's the greatest camera for the money. It's around 650$ body only. Look on http://www.amazon.com It's much more expensive, but it's completely worth it. If you can't afford that, even a Rebel XSI would be better than the 10d.

When I was looking to get a DSLR I looked at the 10D because of its price. In the end I got a 30D and am very happy with my choice. I'm not the kind of person who thinks old technology is bad, but I'm glad I didn't get the 10D. The 10D came out when DSLRs were in their infancy so there are a lot of inconvenient issues with it. If possible I would at least jump up to the 20D as that's the point where Canon really got the whole DSLR thing right.

This is not a good deal. There are even better camera deals which are newer, and have better features. If you are really on a very tight budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which is reviewed at: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html It just came out on November 4, 2008. It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.
