Answer:
I'd go for a BMW 3 series - preferably in diesel: The 2 litre 160bhp does 0-60 in 8.5 seconds & will return 53mpg, beautifully built, great handling, reliable & low depreciation. The 3 litre diesel has all of the virtues plus a staggering 6 cylinder 200bhp unit with a 7 second 0-60 time & still 50mpg. The Audi & Golf are basically the same car - they're not as reliable or well built as they were. The Mazda is hard work to srive & very expensive to run - expect 20mpg, but a lovely looking car. Alfa? Forget it, just too unreliable. It will fall apart. Audi TT - great car, but STRICTLY 2 seater.

A Golf TDI would be the ideal car it is very reliable and exellent fuel economy . Go for the Red DI as this has more bhp and you can get cheap service parts from German and Swedish. and are a great drive. hope i helped.

How on earth are you managing to compare an Alfa 147, near the end of its life and can be bought new or with delivery miles for about £10-£12k with £20k plus cars like the TT and RX8?

Get the Audi A4, please don't buy a TT, they are hideous. The Audi A4 Diesel is great for killing cyclists (soot)

I would go for the Audi TT or A3 or VW Golf.

I have test driven A3's and RX8's and they are both good to drive. However, I chose my first TT three years ago. The first was a convertible which I really enjoyed but I now own a TT 2.0 Coupe which is a great car. It is basically a two seater with space for very small people in the back but only for extremely short journeys. It is a lovely car to drive and is relatively frugal on fuel with consumption around 36 mpg. Insurance is quite cheap and overall maintenance costs are not too bad. Out of the cars you have quoted I would prefer the TT.
