Vauxhall Vectra 1.6 2001 reg?

Problems with my vauxhall vectra sri (p reg)?

  • Hi all hope someone can shed light on this little problem. My vauxhall vectra sri (p reg) has recently started dying on me. When i'm in low gear the engine cuts out and a light comes on indicating an electrical fault. Then when i start the ignition again its fine. Its happened 3 times in the last two days, both on long and short journeys so its not just when the engines too hot, it is an old car and i know its gonna have problems but its just cost me a fortune to change the rear springs so i'm hoping this is an easy job :) thanx to everyone for takin the time to help us out, really appreciate it

Sounds like the classic symptoms of a malfunctioning idle air control valve. Sometimes cleaning will sort it out and sometimes a new one is all that can be done. About 7 years ago I did one on a 2.0 Vx omega and it cost £139 for the part then. It is a relatively easy DIY job though.

Very common problem with Vectras, it can actually be dangerous as the engine can cut out any time. As a result you loss power steering and the brake servo. The problem you have is with the idle speed control valve, this valve maintains the engine idle when you take your foot of the accelerator and the throttle is full closed. The good news it that the part that need to be replaced cost's around £40 from the dealer and is a DIY job to replace. Ja.

the quickest way is to get a garage(independent garages usually have the software) to run a diagnostic fault check when the fault light is on, this should cost approx £46 inc vat this will tell you whats wrong vauxhall's are prone to the egr - exhaust gas re circulation valve - being faulty or it may be a coil pack - these are common too it could be expensive guessing what's wrong so i would get the diagnostic check done first

I disagree with the idle valve answers. Symptom of fault with it is generally over reving. As an educated guess I'd say either crank or cam pick up sensor. Really need to get it on to a diagnostic machine to say one way or another.

You need to clean out the idle speed control valve.
