Volvo V70 and fuel indicator?

  • The fuel indicator of my Volvo V70 seems odd when the tank is getting low in gas. Yesterday I drove for 4hours and when I parked the indicator started to light indicating a need for gas. The screen showed 85 miles before empty. This morning I drive the car and the indicator is in the middle with 200 miles remaining. However it started to quickly go down, 195, 190, 185 and so forth. It took about 15 minutes for the indicator to be close to 80 miles where it should have been and after 15 minutes or so of driving the fuel indicator was in the lows. This has happened a few times with my car and only when I am running out of gas, well not really, but close to needing refueling. So I am wondering what could cause the fuel indicator to jump as if I could drive way more that I could actually do.

On This model there I believe there is a seperate sending float unit seperate from the fuel pump assembly. But I would definitly check all wire connections first. Also its a slight possibility it could be in your cluster/info centere but my 1st guess is the sender

before you spend hundreds of dollars fixing something, you might just have a build up of gunk in the fuel injection system or near the sensor causing it to show fail readings., anyhow, go to chevron, and fill up 91. also get a fuel injection system cleaner and put it in the tank (a few dollars at any auto store). see if this cleans it and fixes the prblem, ive had this happen before---chevron does it all!

yeah, bad float sensor thing.... also here are a couple other suspects... bad fuse, bad wire, bad relay module mine does this a lot 1979 244 dl !!! 450,000 miles and still going!!! i do spend about $50-100 in parts every so often to keep it going!!! HAHA!! -myk3

Failing fuel level sensor in the gas tank is probably cause...replace complete fuel sending unit and fuel pump as set..
