Do you think that a GTI will be an unreliable car? Is it true that VW's are unreliable or are they good cars?

Answer:
I own, drive, and love my 2006 GTI. Why? Because even after 4+ years and 55,000 superlative miles, even after a 'bad day' at the office, when I turn the ignition key and fire up the turbo, life is good again! Driving my GTI's snarling turbo is a world apart; it guides me thru a wide-sweeping curve with a huge grin on my face. If fun is your destination, the GTI is the best way to get there. Honestly, I have had 0 issues. Never has let me down. I really do not know where all these Negative people get their 'stories' from. My wife drives a 2005 Jetta. After 85,000 reliable , trouble free miles, we still recommend it to friends. Its just that solid. My son has a 2008 Rabbit/Golf. Not a single problem with it. My sister has a 2000 Golf with over 160,000 reliable miles . Still goin strong. I have owned Ford, Mazda, Toyota and others, but after my 1st VW I was hooked. There really is a difference. They are a true Driver's Car. Plus, several automotive magazines agree. The GTI was voted 2010 'Car of the Year' by Automobile Magazine. Twice. First car to garner the coveted award a 2nd time. Also, in 2007 , Automobile Magazine actually bought a GTI. They 'pounded and abused' [their words] the car for an entire year. They even 'chipped' and lowered it! After the year ended , the staff reported 'excellent reliability'. No problems with the car the whole year. And the so-called expensive service and parts that other's whine abt. is simply not true. It is a Myth perpetuated by biased, rumour-loving people. The fact is that VW parts and service are no higher than comperable cars such as Honda, Toyota, etc. My neighbor has a Honda. Good car. We compare parts/service prices. Guess what? They are abt. equal. Lets face it, everything is expensive these days. Plus you dont have to go to the dealer for all your parts. Wal-mart,etc. has wipers, filters, bulbs, oil, etc. Myth Busted! So, those are the facts. Dont let Negative people rob you of the genuine thrill of owning/driving such a superlative machine as the GTI. I might just have to visit my dealer and check out the 2010 new, improved GTI..... Hope you get your steel ride soon!!

While I cant comment on the latest model year, I do have quite a bit of experience with watercooled VWs. Theyre pretty unreliable. Lotsa electrical issues, lotsa small stuff that breaks (cupholders, switches, etc. very annoying). They also are absolutely horrific to work on. Everything requires special tools or way too much work (or both). Parts are expensive.

I have a 2007 VW GTI and it's been.. alright. I've taken mine in for a routine service and they come back telling me all of this work needs to be done but they'll cover it. Another thing is pot holes. Beware of any and all pot holes. I've cracked a rim (and since I have the Farenheit) it took a week to get a new one. All of the electrics, however, work great. Even with the little details, I still love it. It's really a great car to drive and somehow it makes up for the service needs.

Manb i wish i were you! i love the gti! the repairs are kinda expensive (like any german car ex mercedes benz, bmw audi) good for you thats going to be my car eventually :) that or a jetta..... or passat i love vw.... but not the beatle
VW are good cars overall, Except for the service, which is expensive from dealer to dealer and town to town. Peace.
