There are some good performance chips out there. The safest diesel performance chip out there in my opinion is the Triple Dog GT from Bully Dog. Here are my reasons. First there are safety parameters built into the Triple Dog GT that can de-fuel the engine if preset parameters are exceeded. For example if transmission temperatures or coolant temperatures are too hot, that will trigger the GT to back off the performance. Second because all of the tuning is done inside of the ECM (Engine Control Module) all of the information that is being feed back to the ECM from the sensors is correct. With some performance chips that sit between the engine sensors and the ECM they fool the ECM by incorrectly giving it false information from what is actually happening. By their very nature they are bypassing the safety parameters that are in place because the ECM doesn't know exactly what is going on with the engine. Third if you are going to be safe you have to be in compliance with all of the emission laws that are out there. About half of the major players in the market are working to be in compliance of the laws in the US that come down from the the EPA and CARB. The Triple Dog GT is one of those products that is on the list to be in compliance once those standards are established.
