How much would an engine swap cost?

How much would it cost to engine swap a v-4 for a v-6 in a 1999 jetta?

  • I dont like the engine in my jetta right now so i want to swap it out for a v-6 and then turbo it. my friend said id have to first replace the tranny so that it could take the extra horsepower, then swap the engine, along with converting it to stick just because i want stick. How much would it cost?

  • Answer:

You mean swap the inline 4 with a vr-6. If you find a wrecked Jetta with the vr-6 and stick trans, then the labor would be about 6 hours, at a common shop rate of $85/hour, or about $500. Getting the wreck depends. It could be a low as $500 to $1500. You would also need the wreck for the shift linkage, pedal cluster, and axles. The exhaust and even the electronic engine controls differ, but I think you can fudge that. But forget the turbo. You can not add a turbo to an engine, because the compression ratio is already as high as it can get normally. Engines designed for a turbo are either diesel, or have a lower compression ratio to start with. And you would never want to buy new parts individually. It would cost much more than the car. Salvage is the only reasonable way to go. A new engine is several thousand, and a new transmission is over a thousand. From the dealer they would be even 3 times that.
