What kind of coolant do you put in a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta GL?

1995 Volkswagen Jetta GL running problem?

  • Well usually I'm a huge Volkswagen Nut and can figure out most problems.... In this situation I'm not necessarily stumped but need some outside thought or advice.... I have a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 5sp and it has been at the shop for over a year new fuel pump put in and hardwired to a switch on the dash. It still however has running issues. When the car is running upon acceleration when the RPMs hit about 3500 there is a surge and they drop to nearly 500 and it takes a moment then that process repeats RPM's cannot remain constant at all....... I have a rough idea but am hoping someone has had this issue and fixed it and can tell me what to do or put me in touch with someone who has.... Please only VW mechanics or persons with this same issue previously respond.,..... Thanks Kristopher

Kristopher, Most likely you have a bad engine to body ground. Use a meter set to ohms an probe from the engine head to a clean body ground. If the reading is higher than about 0.001 ohms you need to pull and clean ground wires. On ground lugs install star washers to get a good metal to metal bite. VW uses smooth washers that are great for max current when new but stink after 10 years or so, they get resistive due to corrosion. Then get a can of DeOxitD5 from CAIG labs. Remove every connection on the engine (sensors etc.) juice the connections with the D5 and reinstall a couple of times to clean up the connections. This has fixed every VW driveability issue I have ever had.

not a vw mechanic and I personally have never had this problem.....I know for a fact there are more mechanics out there that have fixed VWs than there are VW mechanics the funny thing is one of my customers brought his vw in to me with this same problem and we fixed it ....but that's a story for another day
