2003 VW Jetta GLI issue?
-
I own a 2003 VW Jetta GLI with just around 100k miles on it. Last week, I was driving home from work and heard a belt making some noise. The noise was only made when I would accelerate, very rarely when I was coasting and never when I was slowing down. If I pulled my foot off the gas for a second and re-accelerated, the belt would usually stop and the car would have just a tiny jerk and feel like it gained more power. The next day, it was in the single digits outside, and I jumped in my car to run to the store. I noticed my temperature sensor light come on, and figured it was just due to the cold Michigan weather. I watched the temperature gauge the entire trip and it never went above normal. But the car didn't put out any heat. So I turned the car off. Waited ten seconds, turned it back on, and I had heat. I sat the car on Sunday. There was no belt noise that I noticed. When headed to work on Monday, the temperature light came back on. This time, I tried to turn the car off and back on but didn't regain any heat. I was driving on the expressway and heard the belt again. Suddenly, my car was losing acceleration and the steering wheel was difficult to turn. But I managed to get it on the side of the road and shut it off. The car "cranks" but won't start. We tried jumping it to see if it was a battery issue and the car still wouldn't start. I noticed the radiator bulb was a bit low so I attempted to put two full things of radiator fluid into it, and watched as it slowly leaked out. I figured that may be a busted hose. Now one guy said it is the timing chain which is a pain in the butt to get to and you have to take the engine halfway apart to replace. The other guy said it's pistons busting through something or other and the only real option is an entirely new engine! Anyone have experience with these or any mechanical experience that can offer some insight?

Answer:
What engine? No VW has timing chains, they have belts. However, the VR6 has cam chains. This is an unusual issue- I am going to guess it may be a thermostat and/or coolant sensor. When it was losing acceleration, did any of the idiot lights come on? Check engine? EPC?

It could be the accessory belt that was making a noise. This powers the power steering pump, alternator and in most older VWs, the coolant pump.
