How much coolant goes into a 2001 Jetta?

Coolant leak in 2001 VW Jetta?

  • I am having a coolant leak coming from the driver side of the engine. I think it is coming from a hose or hoses going to the back side of the cylinder head. There also seems to be a T joint there. Anyhow the water is accumulating on top of the transmission (automatic). Has anyone had this problem before and maybe know which of the hoses in that area may be leaking. I cannot seem to pinpoint the location. Thanks. Ron

  • Answer:

VW's are notorious for failure in the coolant flange O-ring. The coolant flange is the plastic part that connects to the cylinder head, three coolant hoses, and the coolant temperature sensor (on a 1.8t, at least). It's right above the transmission, and can leak a lot if the O-ring has deteriorated enough. If you're good with a wrench, it's not hard to replace. The process is detailed on sites like vwvortex and fourtitude.
