Can someone think of an argument that a vw golf mk1 gti is safe?
-
Im 16 and looking for a car. I found a vw golf mk1 gti but my mom does not think that it is safe enough. Can someone please give me a valid argument stating that it is just as safe as a modern day car even though it lacks airbags. Keep in mind though, she is a lawyer that has dealt with car accident cases so it has to be VERY convincing. Thanks

Answer:
I have owned and driven mk1 VW's since 1980. I currently drive 1990-93 VW Cabriolets. I have been involved in a few fender benders, only 1 my fault. I was hit on the Driver side Fender by a lady that ran a stop sign, the truck was towed off, I drove home. I Slid into a Mazda 626 on Ice, Totaled the Mazda 626, 88 dollars damage to my bumper, I drove off. I was rear ended by a Cherokee in my Cabriolet, I drove off, and the Cherokee was towed, My cabby was totaled by insurance, for cost damage to repair. I ran in to a Jeep, They ran into a a car, and I slid into them. (their fault) No brake lights. I drove off, they were totaled.... Safe, they are, strong unibody construction, there are no airbags except on the 90-93 Cabriolets I have driven then, as I said since 1980, I own 2 Cabriolets, and my 26 year old daughter has been driving one for 4 years. The biggest problem with a Young driver is that it doesn't matter what you drive, a tank, a plane, or a car. If you act and drive Stupid, you can get hurt, or killed, as well as kill or maim others. Tell your mother this is coming from a man who's first car was a 1958 Austin Healey Bug-Eyed Sprite.

I'm sad to say that you won't have a very convincing argument regarding "idiot SUV driver running red light and crashing into your side", but it does offer very good handling, enabling you to avoid situations before they become major problems. It is also smaller than the average American vehicle, so you adopt a defensive driving style quite early on. Airbags don't make a car safer, it's the structural design of the vehicle that makes the difference. To be completely honest, airbags kill people when they do not wear their safety belts. Have a look at a Golf 3 or 4 if you want something small and safe.

An 83-84 VW GTI MK I is an awesome and very safe car. It has a better suspension and brakes than a Rabbit. It has none of the electronic doodads that remove all the skill from driving. Yet has the driving aids a young driver needs. Good torque, great stopping distance, and precise handling. Just cause she is a lwayer doing accident claims doesn't make her an expert on autmotive matters. Don't say that, OK. You actually found a nice one for sale? They be gettin rare so don't beat the crap out it and leave it for dead. ASE Cert Auto Tech, since 1978, 2003 GLI

It's not as safe if it lacks airbags. You already know that.
