What do you think of the current VW GTI?

Do you think that the Vw 2010 GTI is too expensive for the type of car it is.Are there anyother better values?

  • Answer:

Please define value. For some its just $$. Others would factor in driving dynamics, thrilling roadholding, seat and interior ergonomics , craftsmanship and integrity, etc. Sounds like you are in the market for a sporty , agile, performance oriented car. With practicality. The Malibu is a good family car. Costs less than a GTI, sure. Still, option for option they would be abt. the same price. But the Malibu is definately not known for its sportiness. Not even close. Why do we have insurance agents selling insurance on this site? The GTI would cost no more to insure than a SubaruWRX [4 wheel drive]. Or a Cobalt. If you want cheap ins. get a KIA or Hyundai..... Neither I nor my friends who drive VWs have issues with electrics, or transmissions. Not saying the cars are perfect. All brands eventually have parts that wear out, I believe. Its just that I have not had them. Here are prices according to Road and Track Magazine; Cobalt SS = $23,510. As tested price. Subaru WRX =$28,660. GTI =$24,189. But you have to ask yourself why do automobile magazines consistently award the GTI #1 over all its competitors? Year after year. Quote from Car and Driver Magazine Jan. 2010 ; " We are particularly taken with the GTI's interior design and execution. It looks and feels like a car that costs more than its base $24,189 price, making it even more of a great value in our book." "The GTI is a relatively inexpensive and immensely entertaining vehicle ." "It steers and stops like a sports car". Sure if value is just $$, then the Cobalt wins. But the saying goes; You get what you pay for.... My 2006 GTI has been a solid, dependable, awesome ride; I am going to enjoy it for a long time. Ultimately, it is your decision. I suggest gathering your facts from creditable sources and satisfied GTI drivers . And please disregard negative opinions and myths from others. PS; I did not want extra options on my GTI. So I got one without sunroof, navigation, leather, etc. It took longer, but I got it for a little over base price. It can be done.

Finally! Someone with common sense! You're correct. The GTI is too underpowered for the price (not accounting for typical VW transmission problems). The BEST value for the price is the chevy cobalt ss turbo. Most people will look at the interior and say NO, if you care about performance you might be different. Take it for a drive and tell me any different. The GM 4 cylinders (LSJ and LNF) are very durable. I have a LSJ with around 280 hp and I can tell you GM finally did something right. The highway mileage on my car is unbelievable (I talk about it a lot so I won't mention it...it's way over 30 at 70 mph). If you don't want Domestic...I suggest the Subaru WRX. That's about it...anything else is going to give you nightmares if you keep it for more than the warranty period. Granted...Subarus are some of the best built cars on the road, but it's cheaper to fix a GM than it will be to fix a Subaru so check out the cobalt ss turbo. If you plan on keeping it for a while you'll be better off with the chevy but the subaru should give you a good 5 years or trouble free operation (AT THE LEAST!).

My daughter bought a Malibu with a 5 year warranty and had zero problems with it. My niece bought a Cobalt and her's too had a 5 year warranty and hasn't had any problems either. Malibu was Consumers Guide best buy.

VWs are horrible. Regardless of purchase price they are notoriously unreliable and, once the warranty (good luck with that anyway) runs out they are VERY expensive to fix. Even an oil change costs an arm and a leg: VW ONLY specifies the most expensive oil, Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40, and on the new ones, the most expensive oil filter available today: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?catalog=39&partnum=57561&a=FR39-57561
