How much coolant goes into a 2001 Jetta?

Coolant leak in 2001 VW Jetta?

• I have a 2001 Jetta with a 2.0L 8V AVH. I was driving, and then the coolant light came on, there was steam coming from under the hood, and the engine died before it overheated (probably because coolant sprayed all over the soon-to-be-replaced coil pack.) I got the car towed home, and then I filled the coolant reservoir with water and started the engine. Once I did that, I noticed water leaking from near the driver's side of the cylinder head, but I can't seem to pin point it. It's not coming from the line that runs to the top of the transmission, and I'm guessing that it's either the flange on the side of the head or the thermostat housing, but I can't be sure. I replaced the head gasket a year ago, and there's no oil leaking, so it's probably not that.

  By borrowing a cooling system pressure tester, you can run it up to higher than normal pressure, and that will make the leak more obvious. By the way, don't leave plain water in very long, because the corrosion is very harmful. But you need to have it filled in order to locate the leak.
