Is Van Staal worth buying?

Looking into buying a new VW van for conversion into a camper van - can anyone explain T4/T5 etc?

  • I think we need a VW Transporter Panel Van with windows in as a base model for conversion but they offer T26, T28, T30, T32 and I don't understand what these mean and which van is best... help much appreciated

  • Answer:

Take a look here. T5 is the current model. I run a T4 2.5 tdi conversion (my second) and I love it. It is more reliable, powerful and economical than some earlier models. Driven very gently it will do up to 50 mpg and averages around 40 mpg. It has plenty of power for motorways and hills. It is important to obtain a service history, especially cam belt change at 4 years or 70,000 miles.(T4) The model you choose will depend on your budget. Some of the early vans although well respected are getting a bit tired and rusty now and need a lot of maintenance. Don't let nostalgia keep you poor. http://www.justkampers.com/

the T prefix is used only in diffrence to the vw vans. T is for transporter not type. The T4 were the first of the front engine vw vans and were made for several years with minor desing changes over the years the T5 is the latest van. the T26 , T28 and T30 and represnent the diffrences in the T4/T5 models. All the new vw vans are very good i would personaly go for a diesel for the economy and power. but you need to decide if you want a long or a short wheel base and what you will be doing as they can also option a all wheel drive system 4MOTION for add saftey but im not sure if this gives you off road abilities.

The T means what type it is. Like you have type 1, type 2, type 2.5 etc. From T26 to T32 they are more modern looking. If you are looking for the classic type VW you should buy a type 1 or type 2. Alternatively there is this place in brazil which makes brand new VW type 2 looking vans. http://www.productsifter.com/Driving/ClassicCars/VW-type-2-camper-review.aspx This gives you a bit more info about the brazilian ones. They come brand new and look exactly like the old ones. The only thing is, they don't need any work doing for them.

Uhh, the reason it is called a panel van is because it doesn't have windows, unless you are talking about the windshield or the glass on the front doors (be specific), but by far the best VW transporters were the microbus's produces from 1950 to 1967.

Well definitely you are looking for a window van, not a panel van. Panel van has no windows on the side.(except for the drivers and passengers windows - they don't count) Why not ask VW parts department. They can show you on the microfiche.
