How to find the radio code on a 1999 Volkswagon passat?

• I recently purchase a 1999 Volswagon Passat. Great car but havin some problems. I had to buy the stock stereo off ebay to get it to pass smog. But it says "2 SAFE". Ive read u can find the sticker in the spare tire wheel well or in the owners manuel. well nothing in the wheel well except this sticky piece of paper about 3 inches long and 2 inches tall....but its all worn down and i can barely see anything on it. for the owners manuel. It was dropped in water and pages stick together so i cant see much. Ive also heard U can take you VIN and the stereo ceriel number and call the dealer....but ive put the radio in and i dont know how to take it back out without breaking something on it. And ive asked the dealer before and they say its a $150 charge for them to find it. I read it was supposed to be free....well if you could please please give me and suggestions...im open to try anything!!!! i just need this code....PLEASE!!! well thnks for the help. Kris

  It is not free- unless you beg and plead with the service manager. Go to another dealer, they may be less than $150. No, the code is not in the wheel well, that is the build sheet. It is not in the owner's manual either. Besides, that code is specific to the radio- the seller on Ebay should have given you the code. Also, how does a radio correlate with a smog inspection? I can understand aftermarket exhaust....
