Does the new Volkswagen beetle have the engine in the front or back?

Porsche engine in Volkswagen beetle? 1972 sedan.?

  • I want to put but a Volkswagen beetle and put a Porsche engine in it. What would be the best way to do this and how much would the engine be worth?

  • Answer:

I believe a 356 engine will bolt into a vw trans, but that doesn't mean you won't have fitting issues. These engines are also very expensive, and a 1600 dual port can be modified into a much more powerful engine. I'd look into rebuilding a vw engine than trying to fit a porche powerplant into it.

Type IV engine will bolt up. You might have to change the flywheel, but Kennedy Adapters makes one (I also know VW made one for the bus in the early 70's, but I do not remember what year). It is not a cheap swap, but it is an easy one. The type IV is a 2.0 liter and can be punched out for more power. As far as the engine worth, are you talking about the stock 1600 in the bug? If so, complete running engine will sell for $500. To build a type IV, plan on spending $2000 minimum or find one in a junk yard....I have one in pieces that has been machined and just needs to be put back together for sale in San Diego.
