How do you take the flip key blade out of a vw key fob?

VW key fob?

  • I want to get an extra key fob for my vw bug, it's the one with the key attatched, they are super expensive at the dealership, if i went to a lock smith, would they be able to copy the key so i at least had an extra key by itself, what if i bought a fob on ebay with a blank key, could i get that copied? Would i need it to be programmed?

  • Answer:

Yes, it can be done. If you purchased a blank key fob, it can be cut at a "quality locksmith," and programmed by them. In general, you would need to have a least two keys that are already programmed to the vehicle in order to have most locksmiths do the job. The "key" (no pun intended), is that it must be a locksmith who has the proper equipment to perform both the key "cut," as well as the re-programming of both your old and new key to the vehicle. Call serveral locksmiths in your area and explain what you want to do and get an estimate before ordering the key on Ebay; sometimes you'll get surprised; sometimes the dealership is cheaper for programming than the locksmith is. Hope this helps, a car nut.

I'm trying to do the same thing for my 2001 VW Beetle. Bought it used, they didn't have a spare key, called the VW dealership which is owned by the Honda dealer that I bought the car from and they said it would cost $200 and take about 2 to 3 hours for them to laser cut & program. I did the same thing with my Mercedes SUV, but when I went to that dealer (bought the car from a broker) which is just down the street from this particular VW dealer, they looked at my old key, took my VIN and in 2 weeks they gave, yes gave me a new laser cut key, all programmed for free. I mentioned this to the VW parts dealer and they tried to give me some sort of song & dance about how they are so different. I went onto the VW site and emailed them about this leaving them my email & cell phone number. Hopefully they'll call me as I think it's crazy to pay $200, especially since I'm already battling with the used car dealer because the housing that holds the fog lights is fallen half off & I even questioned this when I was at the lot looking at the car & was told that they only fix "safety related issues on used trade-in cars" and that this wasn't a safety issue. Sure, having it hanging half way off ready to drop on the ground is not safety related, and I only brought the car home at 9pm last Saturday night. If you find a better way to the key fob I would greatly appreciate it if you could email me through Yahoo Answers. If I hear back from VW & it's a positive thing I would share this info with you as well, however it shows I can't email you through Yahoo Answers so if you email me then we can exchange our real email address without publicizing them to the world and hopefully help eachother out! Cheers!

You would need to have the fob programmed. Also, the key is laser cut, therefore it would be difficult for a locksmith to cut it.
