Where is the transmission for a vw beetle yr 2000?

I have a 2000 VW Beetle and the check engine light came on?

• I took it to Auto Zone and it said there was something wrong with the transmission. Either a transmission flush or a transmission replacement. I don't know how much either would cost and I was wondering if it was still safe to drive to and from work, no more than ten miles a day. Thanks in advance.

  Honestly none of us can tell you what is truly wrong, but as a starting point, your owners manual, or some likeness of an owners manual you might find online or check out from a library should show you where you can check all of your fluid levels. You have transmission fluid, and I'm presuming it might be an automatic, and if the fluid level is low then it may slip. So the most basic thing is to see if it is low and add trans fluid if it is needed. What is also true is that nowadays, since 1996, we have OBD-II computers that spit out codes, and some mechanics just look at what the code says instead of actually looking at the car and checking actual stuff like fluid levels and what does the fluid look like, does it have little bits of steel particles in it like some gears are getting ground up? My first experience with a "check engine" light, I came to realize my oil was 2 quarts low, and I just didn't know how to read my dipstick correctly. The important thing is to pull the stick out, wipe off whatever is on it, stick it back in and then pull it out and look at it.
