Difference between 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 and GLS 1.8t?
-
I’m looking an purchasing a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. I have 2 cars that are being sold privately that I have expressed an interest in. This first is a white Jetta GLS 1.8T automatic with 120,000kms, the second is a black Jetta 2.0L L4 FI, neither have been involved in any accidents and are being sold between $3,000 – $3,500. I’m just curious which would be the better deal. I don’t really understand the difference between 1.8t and 2.0L. I travel a lot with work and school and need the best gas mileage possible.

Answer:
i wouldnt go for a jetta from the year 2000-2002 they arent bad cars but need more maintence and more stuff goes wrong than say a 2003 jetta 1.8t which my buddy owns. i personally used to own a 01 jetta 2.0L and didnt like it. and if ur looking at a turbocharged car dont get one tht is automatic transmission that beats the purpose of having a turbo. i mean it will sound good but wont be as quick. my buddy has a manual transmission 03 1.8T and i love it. it shifts smooth and has a nice gearbox. the only thing i didnt like abt it was the way one of the covers for the steering wheel was on when i tried to take it out to rewire somethings for him when we installled his subs. overall the 1.8 turbo is an amazing car. my buddy averages 300 miles a tank and i believe it is a 12 gallon tank. and he drives fast and takes hiks corners quick and puts more wear and tear on the vehicle than most drivers. he does a lot of burnouts tpo show off his car. now i currently own an 05 lancer evo with dou turbo the only work i had to do on the car was install a new clutch when i bouch the car and i put in a new exhaust in it running it at 3" all the way back. if ur looking for a quick performance car then i suggest getting the 01 jetta 1.8T. it will have amazing gas milage and my mechanic says he never sees vw's in his garage so thats a plus the only downfall of having a german engineered vehicle is thatparts are expensive bc u have to get them shipped all the way from germany. i wld stay away from the 01 2.0L though. it gets OK gas milage not nearly as good as the 1.8T tho. plus the turbo sounds sweet especially if u put a new exhaust in it. it will be the best car tht ull ever invest in so far. i love vw's. they are simply amazing but i will never go away from my evo. tht thing is a beast! qith douo cams. oh yeah if u know anything abt cars tht thing is a beast and i jus bought a ford lightening with a V8 and a supercharger and a 5.4L engine i believe. i forgot i jus picked it up today for 9K. it sounds like a beast without even being on the gas pedal. once i upgrade it a lil bit it will be the best truck in town and i dnt live in too small of a town. my town has roughly 85000 - 90000 pple living here. and almost no car tht ive seen in the streets and beat my evo. ive never lost a race. for 25,000 it was well worth the investment. once i upgrade it a lil more oh god. its just a ******* beast! i beat my buddies jetta 1.8T by abt 3 car lengths in abt a quarter mile on the interstate before i saw a cop gunning pple.

well I am not an expert on cars but one thing i know is that the 1.8T is a turbo and you have to put the highest grade gas in it...so it will be more expensive on gas than if you get the other one. Now th turbo is much faster and sounds pretty neat when shifting...but it is all in what you are looking for.both will probably give you about the same gas mileage the turbo may be a little worse depending how you drive.

The GL is the least equipped of the two, A/C was optional, no cruise control and had crank windows. The GLS came standard with the A/C, power windows, cruise and TCS, not to mention options like heated seats, sunroof and two engines which weren't offered in the GL. As for the engines, the 1.8T's specs are for those years; 150hp 155lb.ft, for later 1.8Ts (2002 and up) the specs would be 180hp 170lb.ft. The specs for the 2.0L are 115hp and 120lb.ft of torque, they remained the same from 2000 to 2005. The consumption is similar for the two, but if it's something that's easier on gas you're after there's always the TDI engine (diesel). The TDI was offered in both trim levels.

Yes, avoid anything that has more stuff on it, cause that is more to go wrong. If that is the case, just buy a wheel and ride it around. The 1.8 is almost as economical as the 2.0, while offering more power. They both are very well built, and they both have their share of problems, as does any car. The 1.8 will require premium fuel, so in the long run it will cost more. The 2.0 is still a very good engine.

get the 1.8t, much better car. economical. fun. a beetter deal all around. and its bullshit about using premium gas in it. you dont have to. like any car if you decide to use premium you will boost more and get a little bit more out of ur acceleration.

1.8T is a turbocharged engine with more power. It was the more expensive version of the Jetta when it was new.

The numbers are the displacement or size of the engine. 1.8 = 1.8 liters or 1800cc(cubic centimeters). 2.0L = 2.0 liters or 2000cc(slightly larger) the L stands for liters the t stands for turbo charged 1.8t is the sporty engine while 2.0L is VWs base engine for that year It sounds like you are looking for basic transportation. I suggest going for the 2.0L model if it is an option. It is a very simple engine that costs less to operate, maintain and repair. I would be very cautious buying a 1.8t with this kind of mileage on it. It is a complex engine that can cost a bundle for repairs. One factor is the all of the extra parts bolted to the engine. More parts means more stuff that can possibly go wrong. If you get a chance go take a look under the hood. As a 5 year VW service tech I still cant tell you what all those hoses are called and are for. Often at the parts counter I ask for "that L shaped hose that always breaks". They know just the one I am referring to.
