Cruise control won't work?

Why doesn't the cruise control work on my Toyota Camry 87?

  • I've never had cruise control before, I understand that with my Toyota it doesn't operate at a speed less than 40 kmph. My something ometer doesn't operate and I think it's uncannily stuck at that speed. There's a main on button for cruise control and an operation arm control for cruise and acceleration resume. The main operating switch lights up other than that no signs, clicks or sounds to suggest something is being engaged. Should there be?

  • Answer:

their is not much you can do It will be costly to fix. the car is twenty years old. Time to get a newer car. Your luck to have had it that long.

"My something ometer doesn't operate and I think it's uncannily stuck at that speed" Your speedometer isn't working? A malfunctioning speedometer will cause Cruise Control to not engage. That could be caused by a bad gauge cluster or a faulty VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) located on the transmission. Could also be a bad fuse, relay, or a safety switch either in the clutch or brake pedal that is engaged even if the pedal is out causing CC not to turn on. On my Honda I have to sometimes tap the clutch pedal lightly to get CC to engage.
