You should be able to pick up a nice one for that kind of money and it should not be more than 4 or 5 years old. Good luck

with that much money, you should be able to get easily a 2001+ model. i think the most you might get is like 2004 but thats great for a first car because the toyota corolla is very reliable and is one of the best cars in canada.
