Why is my EFI fuse draining my battery on an 88 Toyota Camry?

  • I had a problem where the EFI fuse would blow while driving after several minutes (up to 15 min or so). I had it checked out by an Auto Electric shop and they said the Computer was bad. I replaced the Computer and had the same problem. I started tracing wires and took the Fuse Block in the engine compartment out and checked all the connectors in there. Since then I don't blow the EFI fuse, but it drains the battery overnight. I did notice in the Fuse Block where the EFI fuse plugs in, the metal sleeve is not as visible as the other fuse slots. Could it be that the Fuse Block needs replaced? I cannot see all the wiring because it is in a bundle of other wires and runs through the firewall, so I can't totally say it is not shorting somewhere either. Any help would be appreciated. I have had the car in 2 different shops now and hundreds of dollars later haven't been able to get it resolved.

    Well, how handy are you with a DMM? Pull out that fuse and insert your DMM in it's place, set to Amps and measure the current draw. In fact, start checking the current draw on every circuit. You shouldn't be drawing more than say 0.1 amps (or 100mA). On most circuits, it should be 0. Now, if your battery is draining, then find the circuit that's drawing it (probably drawing 1 or more amps). If it's the EFI, unplug the computer, check again... still drawing??? then it's somewhere else in the wiring and not the computer. Not drawing anymore??? then it's in the computer somewhere... unless the computer is being told to be "ON", start tracing your ignition switch wires... make sure they are all disconnecting power to your computer. You might even find that pulling another fuse while measuring the EFI current may drop the parasite current to normal. Follow that fuse! Finally, be sure to check the current draw of the Altenator. You might have to disconnect that wire as it usually goes directly to the battery. Check by putting your Amp meter between Neg post of battery and Neg Cable (removed from battery). Good Luck
