I have a '97 Toyota Corolla and I was wondering?
-
I have a 97 Toyota Corolla and almost all of it's miles are highway miles. I was wondering about how many miles I can expect to get out of it if I take good care of it and drive it well. It currently has 232 thousand miles on it. I realize there are a lot of different factors that determine this, but an educated guess would be awesome. Also, if anyone has any tips one how to keep it running longer, I'd appreciate that as well. Thank you!

Answer:
Not many more. For most cars that is 2 lifetimes. However, a car will last as long as you are willing to put money in it. The problem with a car with that many miles on it is that the money to keep it going will keep going up, while the value keeps going down. Sooner or later it will make more sense to put money in a different car, not that one. Drive it until something breaks and then bail.

I think I am going to be the dissenting vote here. Highway mileage is the best mileage you can put on a car, because the temp maintains correctly, everything is being lubricated properly, and the engine and trans just sits there and hums. I have 249,000 mile on my 96 Camry, and I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere. I also have 242,000 on my 92 Celica and it is a dailly driver also. The Camry was maintained well; the Celica was bought used, and not maintained so well. But my brother drives a 92 Pickup under extremely hard driving conditions (delivery vehicle...CONSTANT stop and go) has maintained it very well, and it has 497,000 miles on the original engine. It has had valve stem seals and a couple of timing chains, but that's all. While it is true that repair money can build, and value is definitely going down at that age and mileage, it is also true that the repairs rarely come close to a car payment, especially at today's car prices. Corollas are suprememly reliable. I'd say, "Drive it." Just keep the fluids changed regularly, and don't let it overheat. Hope this helps! God Bless!

you can probably expect to get a couple more thousand miles out of it.. it depends on how much of the car's powertrain (engine / tranny) is original equipment .. alot of the stuff such as sensors, pumps, and pulleys will fail at this much use.. you will need to keep up any preventive maintainence (oil changesm brakes, all fluid swaps) at the respective intervals.. take it to a ASE mechanic to see what you may need in the future as well as a diagnostic if your lights on the dash pop up..i.e. "service engine soon" service vehicle soon ..if so equipped.

Absi, I have a '96 Toyota RAV-4 built with the same engine & transmission as your Corolla. It has 290,574 miles currently & still runs like a top. Expect 300K from it, easisly. The most important thing, is like some have mentioned, change the oil at least every 5,000 miles. My original A/C still works...as do all the power features (Mirrors, Locks, Windows)...the only thing NOT original is the stereo (by choice), and the brake pads (changed every 100,000 miles front only), and the spark plug wires & plugs. I changed the plugs every 120,000 miles, but I actually got 277,000 miles out of the wires, rotor, and distributor. The engine itself is virtually indestructable...LOL, I laugh everytime I run the hell out of it, and that is exactly what I do. It rarely sees any speed under 8o mph...I live in Texas, and highway speed here can get out of hand. A lot of folks cruise at 85mph. I take it to the river, through the river, and pretty much abuse the heck out of it. I kayak a lot, and it takes me to some of the most difficult areas to access. You should be good for another 30,000 miles or more, so figure out how many miles per year you drive & that will tell you about how much longer you should expect to drive that Corolla! (example if you drive 15,000 miles a year, then expect two more years out of it.) That should give you a little time to save up a nice down payment on your next vehicle!!! regards, and happy driving!
