Changing the battery and low rpm when starting the engine?

2007 Camry engine idle but no acceleration. Help me plz.?

  • My 07 Camry LE was parked overnight with lights on-it drained the battery. When I jump started off of another battery, I accidental crossed the negative and positive sides of the battery and tried to start-it did not start, duh,LOL. I corrected the crossed cables and the ignition started. The problem is: the engine stays in idle only, when I press the gas the engine does not accelerate. It just stays idle between 1000 - 500 rpm. When I press the gas it reeves up very little (like 50 rpm). My friend's friend told me to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes and turning the key to on position twice before starting the ignition. Is this safe? Would resetting the computer give me other problems? I thought jump starting a car was no big deal and tried to solve it myself. I don't want problems and I don't have the money to take it to a dealer just for drained battery. Please help me out, Thanks.

  • Answer:

On a lot of new cars if you hook up the battery backwards, you will blow the main fuse. Check this fuse (under the hood) as well as any other fuses. Check 10amp fuse for ETCS

Jump starting a car is no big deal unless you miswire it as you did. Most stories I read about people that do this sound a lot like yours. Check all your fuses. Try resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery, it will only take 30 seconds or so. This will not cause any issues, it is like rebooting a computer, clears errors etc.

likely you're fine. since it starts and idles, i would assume all relays and fuses are good. my guess is that the ecu/ecm-computer maybe in limp mode. if the ecu/ecm receives incompatible info, it falls into a "limp" mode and provides limited functionality and performance allowing you to get to a repair shop instead of leaving you stranded by the side of the road. pull the EFI main fuse or positive battery cable for 30secs (not 30 mins). key off. warm engine and then take it for a non-aggressive drive that includes hwy speeds. that allows the computer to gather a new base line. or forget the drive and let the ecu/ecm do it on it's own. after 40 similar start cycles, it resets management parameters to the new base line anyway. --------------------------- if their are still issues, you need to have the trouble codes pulled. i would have either a reputable ASE shop or the dealer do diagnosis on this. you can go to most any auto parts store. if they have the time and allowed to, will read the codes. give you an idea of where the trouble lies. just don't buy any sensors if a code points to it and they suggest it. sensors need to be tested. checked good, then the components or environment they monitor is in question. which is why you need a pro to interpret the codes. your choice.
