What are Toyota thinking of? They have stopped making the MR2 and the Celica!?

I'm gutted, I really wanted to buy an MR2 when I got a promotion :o( That's a real shame.

its a major lost that the MR-2 is now gone.. the 93-97 MR-2 was the best.. not a big fan of celica beside the awd one..

Not many real answers so far, just some nerds complaining about their hairdressers. The real reason is that Toyota is only interested in making cars that sell a high volume. Unlike Hyundai who doesn't mind selling 20,000 Tiburons while selling 100,000 Sonatas, Toyota/Honda(Prelude)/Nissan (240SX) have no interest in selling a sporty car that isn't a volume seller. The same was true for GM who stopped production of the Camero/Firebird even though it sold near 100,000 annually. Guess, you'll have to get a used MR2/Celica or maybe the Tiburon or a Mini CooperS. The only thing Toyota makes still is the Solara and Honda the Accord Coupe and Nissan has an Altima coupe coming soon. There are plenty of 2 seaters out there now since GM had 3 brands put out one last year, plus of course the Miata and pricey S2000.

But what will all the hair dressers and air stewardesses drive? Maybe they will buy a grown-up sports car like the S2000, SLK350, Boxster S, Z4 etc. etc. etc.

Its a crying shame that the MR2 has been dropped, there's obviously some repressed homosexuals here talking about it being a hairdressers car. Like my MGF, it kinda lives in that zone where people think it's just a stupid little 2 seater for hairdressers. Couldnt be farther from the truth, the MR2 is a wonderfully balanced car, and people always forget that despite only modest power its actually considerably quicker than cars wih much more power due to its size. Throw it at a set of corners and it all becomes clear, the handling is light, balanced and taut. The beauty of any car like this is that it takes genuine skill to hustle it through B roads at a good pace, any fool can drive a subaru imprezza fast (I'm pretty sure my dog could), but wheres the skill? A car for connessuers, not power crazed fools. Celicas looks are still sharp, but its lacking (particularly in performance) in the face of the RX8 and TT now, although there is the new one coming next year with an uprated supercharged VVTi engine from the outgoing Tsport corolla and MR2 TF Some people obviously havn't realised theres a collosal £9000 difference between a new Celica and a new 350Z, and £7000 from an MR2 to an S2000, Z4 or £15k to a boxster! Honestly, what planet to people live on when they compare an MR2 to a Boxster? Besides, if you're really concerned about your macho image, you'd buy a fire breathing, tarmac rippling TVR, not a Boxster......

They are not mad just realised there isn't a market for rubbish sports cars that aren't that fast. if you like the MR2 my advice is a VX220, much more sporty. Also, details are sketchy, but Nissan are bringing out a "baby" 350z which should fill the gap left by the MR2 nicely. Also if you are thinking of a Celica don't bnother and go for an RX8 or if you can live with just 2 seats the 350Z. the best option by far.

Hi Those two cars will become icons in a few years, just you watch. Hairdressers everywhere will be holding rallies, the NEC will be packed with mullets and perms!!
