Hi...I am planing to buy Toyota Sienna 2009, XLE. But little confuse with the difference between XLE n XLE AWD. XLE is 5000 less than XLE AWD. Can someone explain which should I go for. What do you guys thing about Toyota Highlander? Does Honda has similar van too. Which one you suggest. My budget is 30,000 only. Thank you.

Answer:
XLE AWD means, it's a van with ALL WHEEL DRIVE, so all four wheels are spinning, when u push the gas. just normal XLE is two wheel drive. AWD is overall more safe, but is unneeded unless u plan to go drive on ice, dirt, sand, snow, etc. On rough terrain, four wheel drive is very useful, but for every day driving, two wheel drive is perfectly fine, and it uses less gas. Go with the normal Sienna XLE. A normal consumer doesn't really need AWD 98% of the time, and it saves more gas. As for the Toyota Highlander, i think that it is overpriced for it's class, quality, etc. It's a good car, but i wouldn't buy it due to the price, unless there was a big sale or something. Also, vans are much more comfortable than SUVs. I own the Lexus GX 470, and on long trips and such, the Sienna proves much more comfortable to the kids. Honda does make a similar van called the odysee. I would stick with the toyota, it's quieter, and i would choose toyota over honda any day. I have owned both cars, currently i own the sienna. The odysee tended to have transmission problems and such, but so far the toyota is running great. =] The pricing is about the same between the toyota and odysee. Go with the Sienna XLE.

go for the XLE AWD

awd = all wheel drive, handy if you are going to be driving in bad weather, or if you drive like a race car driver and want to take bends at higher speeds

I am not too familiar with toyota vehicles but AWD I do understand. With AWD (all wheel drive) the power from your engine in distributed equally among all the wheels allowing a much better transfer of power to the ground, allows for more traction, keeps the vehicle more steady on slippery surfaces, and helps when towing seeing as it is not reliant on 2 or 3 wheels instead of all 4 for the maximum traction.

One is all wheel drive the other is front wheel drive, makes sense the all wheel drive is more money. If you live in the snow belt go for the all wheel drive, if not save some money and get the FWD model.

CHECK WITH THE DEALER. AWD IS ALL WHEEL DRIVE WHICH YOU DON'T NEED UNLESS YOU LIVE UP NORTH IN THE SNOW. I TOOK A HIGHLANDER HYBRID FOR A TEST DRIVE AND WAS QUITE IMPRESSSED. SINCE I'M A TOYOTA FAN I DON'T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT HONDA. HAPPY MOTORING!

XLE AWD is ALL WHEEL DRIVE eats more gas

AWD stands for ALL WHEEL DRIVE. The other one is just a 2 wheel drive. If you really need the traction, go for the all wheel drive, but generally AWD cars are full time 4 wheel drive. You cant take it out of 4 wheel drive. Sounds good at first... good traction all the time, right? Yep, but the downside is with an AWD, you tend to get worse gas mileage and you will have a lot more mechanical failures, and you will have to replace a lot of parts on it sooner than a 2 wheel drive. My suggestion is to stay away from any thing that is an AWD, unless you live in an area with snow year round. And if you do I wouldnt be looking for a minivan. Get a 4X4 SUV or truck if you want something with 4WD capabilities. As far as minivans go, I would recommend a Honda Odyssey. Ive know a lot of people that are really happy with theirs. And theres no arguing the dependability of a Honda.

Do you need all wheel drive? If not, don't pay extra for it, it will get better mileage without it too. The Honda Odyssey is a great van, and a bit roomier than the Sienna. The Highlander is a good vehicle, but has way less room than the two minivans you mention. Mechanically it is similar to the Sienna. The Honda Pilot is also worth looking at if you are thing of an SUV vs the van, but again, not nearly as roomy inside. With both brands, the vans also get better mileage despite being larger, mostly because they aren't shaped like a brick.
