I'm considering a 2010 Toyota Highlander purchase. Acceleration issues abound. What are the Pros & Cons?
-
I am bummed because I was all ready to buy a new 2010 Toyota Highlander Limited V6---until I did heavy research and I read the details of the unresolved acceleration issues for this vehicle and other models of Toyota.--per NASA, as well as The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). I was not aware of just how extensive it seems to be, and I was not aware that it affected the Highlander so heavily. Based upon the following Links, I believe I should not to buy one. But I would like the readers in here to peruse these links, and tell me their opinions of why I SHOULD, or SHOULD NOT buy a 2010 Highlander--based upon these Nasa and government articles. I have tried to overlook the acceleration issues because I want a Highlander, but these links, which clearly indicate that the issue has NOT been resolved, have basically convinced me other wise. What should i do--buy a new Highlander--or not? If you are not willing to read the links I have provided--then please do not answer. I am looking for educated minds who have looked at these links to tell me if I am, or am not over reacting? Thank you very much. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-20001410-48.html http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/toyota/highlander/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009%E2%80%932010_Toyota_vehicle_recalls#Affected_vehicles_and_vehicle_lines http://www.lemonauto.com/complaints/toyota/toyota_highlander.htm http://blog.taragana.com/science/2010/07/14/government-says-its-reached-no-conclusion-yet-in-toyota-acceleration-investigation-18367/ http://technorati.com/technology/embedded/article/toyota-acceleration-problems-garner-the-spotlight/ http://www.arfc.org/autos/toyota/highlander/recalls.aspx http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/toyota/highlander/

Answer:
The facts speak for themselves. The parade of Toyota defects and recalls is seemingly endless, and many of them involve critical safety issues such as braking, steering, stalling and yes, the still-unsolved problem of sudden, unintended acceleration. This past week, Toyota issued yet another major recall for about half a million vehicles ( Avalon, Land Cruiser, Lexus) which could lose all steering while in motion. Toyota is so desperate that it now pathetically refers to its mandatory recalls as a "voluntary safety campaign". 'Buyer beware' never had as much importance as now.

I wouldn't. Dont be one of those poor saps who got sucked into buying a Toyota because they have good rebates. It's all about safety man. Theres plenty of other options. Widen your search. :D
These web sites you list..I have read and reviewed them as you have asked.....they are from Nasa and the NHTSA....better sources I can not even begin to imagine. These are not ax grinding web sites with a bent to destroy Toyota, but instead they are web sites designed to inform the public on the actual status of Toyota. If you can still want a Highlander after the web sites you have directed me to, then you must really not care about your money or safety. My answer is NO. Do NOT buy it...and that is based SOLEY upon the web sites you have supplied. The evidence --especially from Nasa, is startling clear as both they and toyota have admitted that so far the reasons for over acceleration have not been solved. -------The toyota black box study in one of your links about 50 crashed toyota cars-- saying that not ONE of those 50 people bothered to even touch their brake for even 1 second as their car sped out of control and into a crash, says it all. My guess is EVERY ONE of those 50 people hit the brakes, just like you or I would instinctively done, but the toyota black box didn't record it..even the Toyota black electronic box is flawed. Good luck on your Highlander. enjoy it..but please..do not drive children it it.

From the context of this question it is painfully clear that it was never your intent to buy this vehicle, or any TOYOTA in the first place; and that is your right. The haters line forms on the right - - - - >>>>
Pros = ????? gosh that's a hard one, let me think about it for a while. Cons = It's a Toyota.

say that to the sales man and if he give you a GOOD price then i would jump on it. these "Acceleration thing", to me are just people out there trying to get a quick buck. just remember this, all cars have brakes, E-brakes, nuetral gear, and the 2010 highlander has a push start button which will instantly turn off the car if you press on it thus no power to accelerate. also, i dont like your sources, those are all public opinions.blogs.and wiki? no no no and for NHTSA, it's been almost a year and they cant find the problem with acceleration. and i think last week i read somewhere they say thier testing found the brake were not apply during problem and say it's human error. i dont have any source to convince you it's good or not but i do own a highlander and had the recall on it. basically they cut the pedal shorter so floor mat wouldnt interfere. But 2010 newer model probably dont have to go thru this recall and i do like my snow white v6 AWD Highlander Sport edition love the feel of the engine power with the step of the pedal heh i would stay away from "all wheel drive" ver. if your concern of the accleration

There are a couple of things to remember when buying a Toyota: 1) They have earned more safety awards than any other auto manufacturer in history. 2) Toyota actually has less reports of death and injury than Ford or GM products as reported to the NHTSA. 3) There is no evidence of any problem in Toyota vehicles that does not affect other manufacturers equally or more so - this includes the acceleration problem. Another thing to remember about the Highlander: It is the #1 rated mid-sized SUV by Consumer Reports. Basically, don't let a bunch of scare tactics by angry politicians and greedy journalists make you change your decision. Toyota products are still one of the safest, most fuel efficient, most reliable vehicles on the road. And they hold their value better than any other comparable vehicle. Don't be a follower. Do you own research. Find out the facts. And then make a smart purchase and buy the Highlander. It sounds like you wouldn't even be asking the question if, deep down, you want someone to actually sell you on buying this car.
