How long will a plug or patch work on car tire? (I have a Scion 2008 Xb)?

Do I need to replace my tire from a nail hole or will a plug or patch work okay? I have heard that plugs and patches can be unsafe....I am pregnant and want the safest option for my car so I am wondering if a new tire would be better.

Answer:
Properly installed, plugs will last for the life of the tire, especially for a simple nail hole. Tire plugs have a large head (like a thumbtack) on the inside of the tire and are bonded in place. What you see from the outside is the stem of the plug. They can't blow out through the tread of the tire. The worst that can happen is a slow leak from improper installation, but this is highly unlikely unless it was a "do-it-yourself repair". You're far more likely to get a second puncture by running over something else while driving. Besides, your xB has a tire pressure monitoring system, so any leak will activate the sensor and trigger the dashboard warning light. Relax. There are far more things to worry about than a tire plug. If this really keeps you up at night, go for a new tire. Personally I'd put the money into the kid's college fund.

A patch should last the life of the tire its a permanent seal and the preferred method for fixing a puncture caused by a screw or nail. A plug will work if your in a pinch and could last years but its not as good as a patch. I don't know of any tire shops that will repair a tire with a plug

the safest thing to do would be to replace the tire. when there is a hole, sure you can patch it up but you'll constantly need to watch the tire psi level to make sure it doesn't get too flat, and if it does you'll need to re-inflate the tire again. patches are not meant to permanently solve the problem, they are just temporary. while it may be cheaper, there is no guarantee that it will hold for _______ miles. if you are concerned about the safety aspect, replace the tire.
