Does Maruti-Suzuki Swift in India have an Automatic Transmission Model?

Should i buy the nissan versa base model with manual transmission ? or stick with automatic?

  • I am currently considering a new nissan versa because they are priced wonderfully. The problem is, I am not sure if I should go with the base version, which is 10 grand and manual, or buy the 12 grand automatic. I have never driven manual before, but I know someone who can teach me. I kind of want to save the 2 grand and learn manual since i've heard you have better control with the car, and better mileage. However, I don't want it to become a hassle then wish I had an automatic. Since I will be driving alot, road trips, ect, my question is A) do you prefer manual over automatic? and b) is manual annoying on long road trips, after alot of driving ect. or is it ok? Thanks :)

First of all, while Nissan is typically a good vehicle, the Versa is not doing so well in terms of reliability, to date. I would look at a new Toyota Yaris or a used Honda Civic before buying a Versa, but that is just me. Onto the question - The base Versa model comes with nothing. No A/C, manual transmission, no radio, no power anything (manual locks and windows), no cruise control. Are you willing to deal that for the next 3-5 years? I would spring for at least A/C. I had an old Civic that didn't have it, and it gets old unless you live in Alaska or Greenland. Whether you want a manual or an automatic transmission is all a matter or preference. If you are going to be driving on a lot of long road trips, you would be better off getting a manual. Besides being cheaper, you don't have to shift gears once you get up to 45-50 mph. Plus, the manual will get a little better gas mileage in the city. If you do mostly city driving, you likely want to spring for the automatic.

Manuals are okay. They do get annoying, not on long trips, but short ones. Clutching and shifting gets annoying. Especially in traffic. But if you want to save a little gas and 2 grand, get the manual. However, for 2 thousand more, an automatic is a lot more convenient. Or, you could just look for a used Versa with some fancy extras and an automatic for the same price as a new one.

I have had manuals and automatics as my personal vehicle over the years and both are fine. The new manuals are pretty slick and easy to operate and I'm sure you can get the hang of it very quickly with some coaching. Once you have driven a manual for awhile it will all become second nature, you'll shift and clutch without hardly thinking of it as work. If your planning to make lots of long trips manuals may be a bit more annoying but will generally get slightly better gas mileage so for me its about even.
