What is a CVT transmission and how does it help me?

2008 Nissan Altima - CVT Transmission - Engine Sound?

  • I have a 2008 Nissan Altima and the CVT transmission is supposed to make shifting gears smooth. However, I hear engine sounds coming from the hood of my car. I took it to the dealership and they said it was normal engine sound. It's bothering me because when I drive other people's new cars, their cars don't sound like that. I also heard others say that the CVT transmission could sound funny, which is normal. I don't know what the truth is. Please help!

  • Answer:

A CVT Transmission doesn't have gears, it has a variable pulley system with a belt that allows for a variable infinite set of "gear" ratios. With this system you will not feel the vehicle shift as you do with a conventional automatic transmission. As a result of this the engine will sound a bit louder than a vehicle with a normal transmission. This is not a concern, as the CVT system keeps the engine at its peak RPM to achieve the best power and economy. In my opinion those CVT transmissions are really a terrible alternative to building a vehicle correctly in the first place to get excellent fuel economy. Personally I wouldn't trust a transmission in a car, truck, or SUV that uses a belt rather than gears to move the vehicle.

If I may get technical on the answer that Bill S gave, even automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure and clutch discs before any gears are involved. Nissan has done enough with this technology that people can trust the CVT. Every single Murano ever made, every single Rogue, all Maximas for the last few years. It's the only automatic transmission option for the Altima and Sentra (more than 90% of each model). So maybe half a million cars sold annually have this technology? Sure it can have a strange noise to it. You may just be used to an engine and transmission "stepping" up the gears, while a CVT-equipped vehicle will keep the engine at a constant speed. So it may not be strange noise, rather you're just hearing a normal sound at a more constant rate.

Ask if they can listen and have them check the lower heat shield on the exhaust. Generally a knocking rattle sound on cold start up and acceleration on the 2.5 liter motor. I an all ears if you want to upload the noise [email protected] or [email protected]. No the Altima is a quiet car with just a little fuel injector tick sound heard inside the car if your very quiet.
