1997 nissan maxima water pump & thermostat replacement. Reinstalled tensioner-all good. made noise when start?
-
opened the plate for the water pump and tensioner for timing chain, All went together good, chain went and fit well. After putting back together, fluid all changed, I went to start the vehicle> I turned the key, started quick, but sounded terrible (like valve). As soon as the car turned over, i heard the noise, and i shut it right down, not even two seconds (didnt want to hurt anything!) I know this doesn't sound right, but the nissan dealer kid said that noise is common till a few cycles round the timing chain and tensioner back to normal... Has anyone heard of this, I trust the nissan people, but dont want or need to buy a new motor!!! I really dont want to take off everything to take the timing cover off. While the pump and tensioner was out, the inside of the motor, from what I could see, looked great!!! PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE HEARD THIS OR HAS HAPPENED TO YOU< OR ANY OF YOU TRUSTY NISSAN TECHS, please let me know if this noise is temporary!! Thank You very much ANY INPUT IS HELPFUL- this is ny everyday car and its on the 4th day already!! love my 97 maxima, hoping for a infinit (when the V8 sedan is back)

Answer:
Completely normal that tension device takes several minutes to pump up do not rev up the motor just let it idle and the motor noise should quiet down on it's own. on 1995 cars the tensioner is of the old style and may take hours to pump up. Some cars you may have to drive slowly around to quiet the chain noise. Wow 4 day's for a first timer to change a thermostat and water pump? Nissan technicians can do that job a little faster like 4 hours? (cost, time vs. money) A automotive hoist really helps and years of experience. Don't worry you did ok. But turning off the motor after your heard that chain was not good. Start it back up and let it idle in a few minutes everything will be ok. If the chain jumped time the check engine light will light and trouble code will show camshaft timing.

Could be lifter noise, which will go away after a few seconds, but it sounds more like your camshaft is out of time. When you re tensioned the belt, its possible for the camshaft to move a whole tooth out of time on the slack side of the belt. Recheck your timing before you run it anymore. This could save you a lot of $$ Money.
