05 Nissan Altima- swapping transmission?
-
I have a 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R. I have an auto transmission which apparently needs changing. I've actually considered the 6 speed manual version before. Ive found a manual transmission online for a great deal. But now that I need to switch out my auto, I was curious if it's a strenuous process to make the switch from auto to manual. and how much more it will add too the cost of labour.. Thanks

Answer:
No please don't do that, I have done something like this before only with a Sentra SE-R, it had a 4 speed auto and was swapped to a 6 speed manual. I had to remove the torque converter and install a clutch instead. taking out a torque converter from the engine is very difficult, too much work. After that my transmission started having issues it took me more than 3 weeks to finish. Nor worth the time and money, keep it automatic.

this gets asked SOOOO much on here. The answer is IT IS NEVER WORTH IT. OK, you will need the tranny, tranny mount, COMPLETE engine wiring harness as plugs for the tranny are different, the flywheel from the manual car, the axles from the manual car, shift linkages, clutch master cylinder, hydraulic lines, shifter, shift knob, shift boot, center console from a manual, ECU from the manual, the three pedal assembly as the brake in the automatic is too far left to allow travel of the clutch pedal, Generally speaking MOST shops charge about $1,200-$2,000 JUST IN LABOR to do this swap. Then add another $3,000-$5,000 for parts, and you have $7,000 in the conversion.

I always tell people, if you want a stick shift tranny, buy the car that has it already. you will have a lot of cost and labor. you need to get the tranny, get the clutch assembly, flywheel. you would need to buy/find a clutch pedal, get a master & slave cylinder. Then you get to find a new center console designed for the stick. Then you get to rig it all up. labor wise will kill your wallet. labor I would say could easily be 10-12 hours. PLUS you now have to have the car computer reprogrammed to acknowledge a manual tranny instead of the computer controll automatic.

Unless you have the complete car the 6 speed transmission came out of it may be imposable to convert that 5 speed auto transmission car to manual. All the computers in cars talk to each other ABS wheel speed sensors and final drive ratios will play heck with the "Check Engine Light" "ABS" and "VDC, traction control" Just running the Hydraulic line for the clutch may be to daunting for a back yard mechanic. Dual mass flywheels cost $1,000 and the front sub frame and complete power train needs to be removed for that job. Do you have a lot of money? Can you be with out your car a month or two? Just replace the 5 speed automatic and this time change the ATF (drain and fill) every 20,000 miles. Or once a Year.
