Nissan service center failed to complete job and manager didn't completely fix it. What would you do?
-
I am very automotive/mechanically savvy and usually do my own repair work. However, I was in the midst of a home renovation and didn't want to spend the time to fix my truck. I brought it to Nissan to diagnose and repair. I knew the problem was an accessory pulley, but did not have the time to diagnose it myself. Turns out to be the alternator. I had a lifetime warranty from autozone on the alternator so I supplied that to Nissan. They replaced the alternator and belts. I was told that they couldn't guarantee the alternator (duh) but if it broke, they would replace it again, free of charge, for 12 months. I was also charged for 4 hours of labor, which I said was wrong because It takes me 90-120 minutes to do the job myself. Anyway, the new alternator went out and I brought it back. The service manager said they couldn't guarantee the labor anymore and i would have to pay again. I took my truck and left. I called the service director. He agreed with me that I was initially charged too much, it should have been 2 hours and not 4. He said he would credit me the difference. I also told him that they didn't fix the problem the second time, like they promised and I ended up doing the job myself in an hour. Cut to the chase. He agreed it was embarrassing. He credited me for the 2 hours of labor, and gave me a $125 voucher for future service. I think he should credit me for the whole job, since they didn't actually solve anything and i did it myself. How would you handle this? I am thinking of sending him the check back for half the labor and disputing the charges on my card. Any feedback?

Answer:
Dispute the charges! That is some BS!

First thing Nissan technicians like me get very unhappy when the customer comes in with parts from AUTO-WHAT. One year 12,000 miles should only be for repairs made with Nissan genuine parts. Nissan repair and Nissan Parts warrantied with receipt nation wide. No warranty on labor only repair with who knows what was remanufactured or to what standard Auto-What part. I agree however you were overcharged. 1.0 hours to R&R alternator and .5 hour to full recharge and test the battery test alternator output and starter draw also recommend replacing those noisy fan belts add 1.0 hour more. A complete job with battery alternator test slips and documentation. Or so called lifetime alternator that gos south ruins your battery and that is what you have. Remanufactured Nissan alternator has many more new parts inside and preformes just like a new part really. I cannot say the same for a DURA-LAST.
