What are AWD sports cars?

Why doesn't Nissan offer anything AWD with manual transmission?

  • Nissan has always been my favorite car company. But, living in the Northeastern U.S., I've also become a fan of AWD cars that kick *** in the snow. My only gripe with Nissan is that none of their AWD cars are available with manual transmission (except the XTerra, but I'm not a big truck fan). This even carries over into their Infiniti brand (G37 with AWD is only available with automatic or paddle shifters, but getting a manual G37 necessitates RWD). I just don't understand what their problem with AWD manual is. Subaru, Mitsubishi, BMW, Audi, and others have been doing it successfully for years. In fact, a major chunk of Nissan's motor sports heritage comes from the 90's Skyline GT-R's, which thrived on their presence as AWD manual beasts. Now, you can't even get a GT-R in manual. I just want to know if there's a good reason for this. Why must they be so cruel to me?

  • Answer:

Well ever since Ferrari invented Tip Tronic auto trans many years ago (paddle shifting) almost all car makers have some form of an auto trans with manual mode. Manual trannys are fun to drive and I own one myself but car makers make cars so they are easy to drive and for most of the common idiots that buy a car can't really drive a stick much less a car without ABS, VDC, and all the other computer controls that keep the idiots from wrecking their cars just going 2 blocks to the gas station for milk. Could you imagine all the idiots with money that we sold 90K GT-Rs to that if the car was a stick and without all the computer controls how many of them would wreck them....I see a lot og GT-R in my shop as it is with curb checked wheels and damage to the wheels and body were they hit the wall on the turnpikes becuase they were going to fast and lost control....and thats with all the computers on board....

It has to be based on research of who buys there vehicles and the potential profit of each vehicle that they sell. There must not be enough market for it. It's cheaper to mass-produce the same engine and transmission on one line per vehicle than it would be to make X number of manual transmissions that may or may not be sitting in dealer lots in a year. BMW and Audi are niche markets - comparable with Infiniti. Even Subaru is a niche market in that everything they sell is AWD (excelt the new BR-Z). Noone should follow the Mitsubishi business model -they are in bad shape.

Stupid Flanders

With ever stricter emissions letting off the gas closes the throttle and overrunning down shifts tends to allow the cat converter to cool off. The GT-R is all wheel drive dual clutch manual automatic. I bet the days of actually clutching and grabbing gears are numbered. BMW by the way comes with a 8 speed automatic trans standard the 6 speed manual is a option. Cars have never made as much power or are safer that they are now. Soon you will swipe a card and the car will take you where you need to go sad days indeed.
