What's a practical car repair you should know if you drive a jalopy?

I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima and would like to know whats up with the car? Its an automatic.?

  • When i start my car up and put it in D gear the car accelerates slowly. As i put a little bit more pressure on the gas pedal the rpm's go up to about 3 or 4 but the car does not accelerate until a second or two after revving at the higher rpms. Sometimes the car makes a sudden jerk of acceleration when i slightly put my foot on the gas pedal. The car has about 61,000 miles on it. Sometimes i speed and drive the car rough. It started happening recently and has become worse everyday after. I plan on taking it to a mechanic tomorrow. I would like to know if anyone has experienced this problem or know about it. Any suggestions Please. Thanks, Scott

Dont take it in to the shop unless its under warranty! I would trade it in on a new one before the trans goes out.

Sounds like transmission problems. If it were a manual, I would say clutch. Take it to a mechanic sooner rather than later.

first off, check your fluids. they might be low. fill em up until you cang et to a machanic. second, it seems as though your torque converter might need replacing. on automatic transmission cars, this is the equivalent of a clutch. these things are a wear and tear item and down the line will need to be replaced...

Get ready for the big repair bill. You can avoid it by trade in the old max for a new Maxima. Your chance to get the most money for the old car is drive it in heated up so the trans won't act up as much. Automatic trans replacement with a new Radator will end up ruining your Hollidays. I expect the cost out the door to be almost $4,800. Or a good down payment on a newer car. Your Transmission has low line pressure or worn out clutch packs inside that just don't hook up when cold.

Sounds like a trani problem, try moving off in L or 1 and shift the gear as you speed up.
