What are the 16+ working hours?

Does anybody know if the working tax credit effects single people working 16 hours?

  • I'm hearing all sorts of things concerning working tax credit .I'm single and work 16 hours and receive working tax credit, will I be losing anything ?

  • Answer:

As other answers have said there will be no change for single parents working 16 hours a week, but just to add that the other group affected by the change will be 50-60 year olds without dependent children who up to now have been able to claim working tax credit at 16 hours in some circumstance, I think if they had been long term unemployed, now they will have to work 30 hours to be eligible.

If you're single AND a parent then 16 hours qualifies you for tax credits if you are single and NOT a parent then you'll not get tax credits my son is single,25, lives alone and does not get tax credits, as he works 18 hours a week

The change doesn't affect single people so there will be no change. Couples must now jointly work at least 24 hours a week. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcreditsbudget/index.htm

If you are a SINGLE PARENT, then it will not affect you if you work 16 hours.
