What Is My Car Worth?

What do you think this car's worth? (PICS INCLUDED)?

  • Please read description and also look at this page: http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/2303741437.html I need help on buying my frist car. I am 17 years old and im looking to buy my frist car, to use it for high school and occasionally to go wherever I need to go. I came upon a fantastic looking car, it's a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS in PERFECT condition, it looks brand new and according to the description it's very well taken care of. Then- There's the price. The person selling it is asking $4800 for it, and I checked KBB and a car like this is at most worth 4200. I called the seller and I asked him that I (supposedly) have 3500 dollars and asked what would be the least he could sell it for, well, he said that the car's worth the 4800 and that he wouldnt bring the price down because the car is such in good condition (which it truly is) That was very disappointing, since I really really want the car, but I dont think I can afford the 4800. What do you think this car's really worth and what could I do to try to get him to bring the price down??

  • Answer:

To be honest, since you are 17 the person is going to think that he can get over on you. If you go there and show him cash he will come off of that price, I guarantee it. I have an 01 Eclipse, and I hope to get around 6-7k for it, but it also has over 5K in modifications. Remember when you are buying that TTT is not included (tags/ title). If I were you, and you arn't going to be making a payment, I would offer him 4k when you have it and see what he does. EDIT: After looking at the car, I wouldn't even pay 4 for it. It really isn't in that great of shape. The paint looks nice, but that color of 3g eclipses is known to have paint cancer (where the paint fades real bad). Also, the drivers side seat is ripped, the dash is cracked in two places (common for this year) and it appears that there has been an aftermarket CAI and headers on it at some point in the past judging by the pics of the engine. If the owner reflashed the ECU you are going to be up a crap hole with the engine without those mods. At 139K miles, I think you can do a lot better on a different eclipse at about the same price. Hope that helps.

He states at the bottom, just before the pics : "Please no low ballers, dealers, or scams. We will be providing a clean and clear blue Texas title." So no, showing him $4000 is not going to make him take the money. Two things work against that theory. 1. He knows what the blue book is and he knows the car he has. 2. He now knows you want it and doesn't have to budge on the price. He specifically says "No Low ballers" Anything lower than $4500 is a low ball. You were dumb to do the $3500...because he probably would have gone down to $4400. If he thought you were serious.
