What important steps did you take to successfully relocate to another state?

My MD state tax was not withheld from my pay. What steps should I take to pay it back?

  • I moved from Virginia to Maryland last year, but did not realize I had to fill out a tax form for work. I had contacted HR about my address change, but besides changing it in their system, I didn't hear anything tax-related. I understand I should have personally noticed that the state tax was not being withheld and I am at fault for that. Now that I realize the mistake, I would like to fix it ASAP and pay back what I owe. What course of action should I take now that there is less than a week left until the deadline? Thank you in advance for any help and guidance provided.

  • Answer:

As to 2011, your only recourse is to file a Maryland Tax Return and submit the amount of tax that you computed to the proper authorities. As to 2012, I think that your best bet would be to speak to someone in either your company's human resource department or in your company's payroll department.
