How do you clear codes for emission test?

98 Mits Mirage Failed 5/8 smog Codes?

  • Hi, I have a '98 Mitsubishi mirage DE, 1.5 L engine with 157,000 miles. My question echoes that of a previous poster and that is I can't get my car to pass smog. It failed the smog test and then failed to recognized enough codes to even be connected to the smog machine at another visit. It failed the following 5 codes: E.VAP, Heated O2, Reg O2, Catalyst, and Egr. I have tuned up the car, meaning I changed the oil, replaced spark plugs, rotor, distributor cap, and air filter. It will pass the emission test but will not pass the functional test. I apologize for such a long post, but I need to tell everyone that I had trouble passing the car 2 years ago. It failed at some local shops so I took it to Mitsubishi. It failed the first time, but then passed on the next visit. I talked with the technician and he told me that he drove the car about 100 miles into the mountains. I did the same thing this past month, but I couldn't get it to pass. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.Thank -you

  • Answer:

try a gallon of methyl alchohol in the tank(mix ratio 1 gallon methyl,,to 10 gallons gas,,,,, just before you bring it in for testing,,,,also,,do not switch your vehicle off before the test,,this will let the catalytic converter cool down and you will fail for sure then.
