Why did my DirecTV remote stop working?

Why does my Mercedes ML430 remote stop working when I change the battery?

  • I have a 2000 Mercedes Benz ML430. The batteries were dying on my remote, so I purchased 2 new Maxell CR2025 3V batteries. I popped open the back of my black remote and put in the new batteries. Now my remote cannot control the locking, unlocking, trunk unlocking, and panic features. The Maxell brand of batteries came stock with the remote. Can anyone please help?

I have to assume that you put them in correctly and that they are making good contact? Look through your Owner's Manual, or call the MB service department. The remote probably lost it's connection code to the car when the batteries were removed. Each remote has a specific code matched to the car, but for ease of replacement and manufacturing, it is in what's called volatile RAM that is erased when the batteries are taken out. That way any remote could be reprogrammed for another car, but wouldn't work with the other car while programmed for yours. There is usually some set procedure to follow to reset them. (Like turn the ignition key to the on position and hold the remote's button down for 5 or 10 seconds until it blinks at you twice. This is only an example, as I don't know what the procedure is for your car! If it actually works as I described, I'm going to start my own Psychic Network.:)

Just use your spare key for now. Don't waste your time reading the manual because it won't help. You can try a reset, and if that still doesn't work, then you might have broke the key while trying to replace the battery and you might need to get a new key. But since a new key is expensive (i think around 200 from what I remember), just use your spare key.

Mercedes keys cannot be reprogrammed, not even by the dealer. They will retain their memory while the batteries are changed. I'm certain that there's a polarity issue here, or that the battery holder isn't correctly inserted in the key.
