What Do You Think Of The New M.I.High?

What do you guys think about the new E class and the new direction Mercedes seems to be headed? Good or bad?

  • The new 2010 E class is much more angled and modern looking. Right for the times, but I wonder if the timeless elegance that Mercedes promotes in the previous generation E class is lost in the new model. The classy E class is now a more businessman's saloon rather than a classy vehicle. What I don't like about the new styling however is the overly plastic look of the interior, and the Hyundai taillights in the rear. If the hood ornament weren't displayed, you would probably get many people who don't know cars assume you were driving a Japanese economy car. Some harsh criticism, but take away the glamour of the brand name and what do you have with the new model's styling? What about the new direction Mercedes is headed as well? I personally see it going in two directions. The Mercedes image I grew up with is of accomplishment and success. If you bought one, it meant ultimate luxury and prestige. I fear many of the new models have lost that quality. I see any Mercedes model under the CLS as "cheap" in its appearance, and anything above as where Mercedes should be and has always been known to be. The materials are top rate in those cars and the styling is timeless yet fresh. The prime examples being the new S class and CL. Though they are the top line models, the attention could be passed down to the lower models as well. I used to really like Mercedes, but with the new introductions such as the new E class and GLK, I don't know what to think. I like the styling of the new C class and I think it works very well since it is supposed to be a sportier model, but not the same as the E class. Perhaps the brand should split into two names like Toyota and scion, with the "cheap" cars in the lower branch and reserve the silver star for the more opulent models. Any thoughts??

  • Answer:

I sometimes drive a 2 month old E-Class for work (old model). It is a good enough vehicle to drive, but very basic, especially for the price tag. The new look enhances the model in my opinion, unlike new Jaguars which may as well have a Hyundai badge on them,

I love the new style of the E-Class. Finally, Mercedes Benz got over that old design. Not only does it look good and MODERN, but it also has better performance and is more luxurious. Although they have new designs, all Mercedes Benz models now have more sophisticated and radiant designs that play into the time period. Why, all other car companies are also producing new designs that are totally different too? Nope, Mercedes Benz should stay as one company. I think their designs are outstanding and just look at each car's performance. Both innovative and luxurious, Mercedes Benz should continue their production of these new models. Oh yeah, and one more thing. Mercedes Benz does have other branches for more luxurious models, like Maybach. It even teamed up with McLaren for making some cars.

Mercedes chose a risky path by changing the design on the E class. I think that it was a good change for the better. Mercedes needed a slight change in their designs in my opinion. The E class is looking more like the S class in its design and aerodynamics. They had a nice engine upgrade too. I'm glad they redesigned the E class.

I'm afraid I don't have much to offer on styling cues, but I do have a thought on why Mercedes is making some of these changes. I know Mercedes has had problems in the recent past with the bottom line when I comes to their automobile division ( as opposed to their heavy industry and truck/semi production across the pond). They make the least amount of money per car out of the euro manufacturers, and the shift is being made by the other euro companies to streamline production (Porsche introduced Kaizan production methods when the Boxster first came out; a Japanese streamlining approach). The cheapness you feel present in the lower models is likely Mercedes' way of trying to cut the fat, so to speak. Plus they need overall sales figures to rise, to keep the company viable. If you don't see any Mercedes on the road, how much do you think about Mercedes? The alternative is to become a boutique automotive supplier, which may sound appealing to some, but would be a major step backward for the company. If you want a "real" Mercedes, pay up for the high-line models. If your a sucker for the name, pay for the cheap models. Let those buyers pay the overhead to keep your favorite models alive and well!

I to have long admired Mercedes-Benz. My uncle always owned one. I owned a 97 E320 for one month. too many electrical problems, ect that cost too much money to upkeep for a collage student. It seems they have been going in the wrong direction. With the cheesy ML that came out in the late 90s (Much rather own the RX300 if i had to choose) and the SLK total trash (not a real mercedes) (though i do love the 2003 Kompressor hatchbacks even tho i know there junk too) I don't know many people that own the "new generation" mercedes so i really cant say how mechanically sound they are, but i absolutely drool over the new CL class, the GL. I'm not gonna lie, the new E class could very easily be confused for the 35k dollar Haundii.. Eww. If you would ask my mother her opinion of Mercedes anymore.. "any poor ******** can go out and drive a benz these days." really, people that can afford a kia are driving the c class these days. its pure trash destroying the picture you and I had of Mercedes growing up.

I do like the new E class. I found the current one (w211) to be a bit to round, and a bit boring (before the facelift). The new one reminds me of the older boxier Mercedes. So far I like the new Mercedes (excpet for the S class, its just to round) but other than that I like the New Mercedes. Also, theyre not so low in quality anymore, in 2008 (or 2007) Mercedes was #4 on the JD power list.
