HOW TO REMOVE BROKEN IGNITION SWITCH 1992 MERCEDES 320 SEL?

  • I HAVE A MERCEDES 320 SEL W140 THE IGNITION SWITCH IS BROKEN INTERNALLY THE KEY IS JAMMED IN AND WILL ONLY TURN TO UNLOCK THE STEERING AND NO MORE HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE IF SO HOW DID YOU FIX IT HOW EASY OR HARD WAS IT TO REMOVE THE BROKEN SWITCH THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP

  • Answer:

take a close look at the lock cylinder. You will see two semicircular holes around the edge. There are two matching semicircles on the column housing. What you have to do is align these so that you have two round holes. There is a mercedes tool that inserts into the holes and releases the cylinder. If you don't have the tool, you can fiddle it out with two very thin screwdrivers. If you can't get the holes to line up, you're screwed...you'll have to drill the cylinder.

Above is correct. To align the 2 marks, you need to turn the lock into the 2nd position (1 notch after lock). As long as you can turn it to that position, removal of the lock cylinder is relatively easy. When the lock has to be drilled, it makes a mess of the internal components behind the ignition lock and you usually end up having to replace the column lock and starting switch as well as the lock cylinder.

The best way to do it is, take it to the dealer and pull out a credit card. That way you know it's fixed right, and you get a warranty on parts AND labor.
