What's better a Garrett turbo or a Green?

Is this Garrett Turbo/ Turbonetics wastegate a good deal?

  • I dont know too much about turbo internals and what not but my buddy's friend is selling his turbo/wastegate both for $600. The turbo is a Garrett T3/T4 built and ported, 58 Trim with a stage 3 cartridge and a 360 deg. thrust bearing kit. AND its still under warranty by a local shop. The wastegate is a Turbonetics evolution. Was just wondering if I should buy it off him before somebody else gets a hell of a deal. No shaft play or bent/chipped fins or anything. He only put it on his sentra se-r for 2 weeks at 15psi until it blew his motor so hes selling it. Anything else I should look for just incase he's tryin ta screw me over? This may or may not be going on my 2004 3.0L V6 Mazda6. I'm only planning on running about 5-7psi until I get some forged internals. And yes I have over $4k to work with and am well familiar with the modifications and money involved with a turbo in doing it the right way. What should I look for in order to not get screwed? Just shaft play, oil in the turbine, and bent fins?

  • Answer:

Check to make sure there's no shaft play, no bent fins, no clipped fins, no oil or coolant seals that are bad on either side (if it's water cooled CHRA), etc. If it's warranted, it very well could be a good deal. I would also make sure it's a true Garrett unit and not a cheap Chinese knock-off, same with the Wastegate.
