  • Answer:

Do you have more than 100,000 miles on it? If not you *may* still be covered by the 100K mile motor warranty. Take the VIN# to a Mazda dealer to find out. If it won't start at all here's the first things that pop to mind. 1) You flooded the motor. If so and you've cranked the heck out of it trying to start it you may have destroyed the apex seals, too. At this point I would crawl under the car and remove the spark plugs (keep the top & bottom plugs separate as they are different) and see if they're fouled with fuel. Clean them off. Before re-installing dribble in a couple ounces of motor oil into the rotor housings through the lower plug holes. When you try to then start the car hold the gas pedal to the floor for 5 to 10 seconds. This will tell the ECU to supply no fuel so the cranking will just spread the oil and give you some compression back. Then try starting normally. 2) No start due to bad ignition coils. They're a known weak spot so check them. 3) Dead apex & side seals. A Mazda dealer or rotary engine specialist can run a compression & vacuum leakdown test to determine if the seals are toast. You can't do a regular compression test like on a piston engine so it has to be done by someone who has the right tester.

"As-Is" means the car is not warrantied after purchase. The problem with rotary Mazdas (and cars in general) is that they are only as good as the owner who takes care of them. If you purchased an extended warranty with the car bring it in to the dealer for repair and the 3rd party warranty provider will reimburse for parts and labor expenses. If you did not get the extended warranty at the time of purchase it is not worth it to purchase one now. One great thing about Mazdas is they most raced brand on any given weekend, so shops specializing in Mazdas (esp. miatas and rotaries) are pretty common. They are your best bet for knowledgable service and repair when it comes to fixing your RX-8 outside the warranty. Once your issues are fixed remember it will require a lot of attention! It drinks oil like the Gulf of Mexico and the rotary engine loves to eat seals and spit it back out. There are some issues with flooding too. Mazda does not recommend synthetics for the RX-8, however the Motorsport division recommends synthetics for racing conditions. Although it requires a lot of attention, the rewarding driving experience is well worth it. Near perfect weigh distribution, balanced and neutral handling, smooth and high-revving operation, precise gear shifts, all contribute to the RX-8's reputation as a true driver's car. Finally, I tell everybody with Mazda issues to join an online Mazda forum. RX8Club.com is an excellent rotary source for all your troubleshooting issues.

Find a shop that will stick an American V8 in the car and all the problems with the RX-8 will be solved. No more lack of power. No more blown rotary engines. No more not being able to drive the car daily because you have to adhere to a strict warm-up routine. No more filling up the oil along with the gas. The rotary is a great design, it's just highly inefficient, underrated in size (it's really a 3.9L engine, just don't tell rotorheads that, they might blow an apex seal), have thirst like a V8 1 ton truck, but the power of a civic.

If you bought it as is and it has no warranty you can take it wherever you want but the reality is that you're going to have to pay to get it fixed.

Joe

Since you bought it as is they aren't going to fix it unless you pay for it.
