How to remove stereo from 1995 Mazda Protege?

  • My girlfriend has a 1995 Mazda Protege and for her birthday I got her a new stereo. She doesn't know I got her one yet and I am going to install it without her knowing. I was checking out how to remove the stereo and there is no screws in the side panels like the cars I have previously changed the stereos for. I wanted to know if someone had an experience with this year and model removing the stereo. It is the manufacturer stereo still, I know that doesn't matter much. Any tips?

    I suggest you buy an install kit from crutchfield.com Comes with any necessary trim pieces, din support, wiring harness/plug and full paper printed documentation on removal and install. I recall this model range being tricky to remove the unit. Something about a hook shaped tool you need to buy or make with wire to fish on either side of the unit to release some hooks.
