Supercharger turbo question Honda.

Turbo vs Supercharger Honda Civic 98?

  • whats the best thing to do with a honda civic Turbo or Supercharge its a stock D16Y8 eng. and i dnt wanna buy a eng. how many more hp iam i goin 2 get

  • Answer:

Which you want depends on what you want from the car. Turbos work more efficiently because they are driven off the exhaust pressure, which would otherwise be wasted. Superchargers are driven off the crankshaft, using power that could otherwise go to the wheels. That being said superchargers are better off the line because turbos take a bit to build the exhaust pressure to start working, which is known as turbo lag, while the superchargers start being effective much quicker. However, because turbos are more efficient they can actually make more power in the long run so they are better for longer distances or where you start out not stopped. Superchargers are generally better if you want to race stoplight to stoplight while turbos can be more effective if you decide you want to pass someone on the freeway. The other factor to look at is that superchargers are generally easier to install, because you usually don't need to tap into the engine's oil system or mess with the exhaust at all. Either one will, if set up right, give you a lot more power. Just make sure the rest of the car can handle the results of the extra power (greater strain on engine internals, can the radiator handle the extra heat the engine will produce, can the transmission handle the extra strain, etc.) or you can cause yourself lots of problems later. If you want to keep the engine stock, I would limit the pressure boost, regardless of which you decide to go with, I am not that familiar specifically with Honda engines, but be conservative. Most engines can handle 2-4 PSI without much trouble and you should notice a difference. in power. Good luck!

Well it all depends on wat u want your engine to do. i u need more hp in the higher Rpms then u would go with a turbo. turbos usually give you a higher top speed. if u want more torque in the lower Rpms then u go with a supercharger. they can help you with acceleration. theres always a draw-back to everything. Superchargers dont really have anything else for you when u get in the high Rpms. its almost like its just there. Turbos can have turbo-lag in the lower Rpms. but to me the best way to go would be to start off with a small turbo. they give u the best of both worlds....nice amount of torque and hp. also they dont suffer so bad from turbo lag because they are smaller and its easier to get the turbo spinning. u can probly gain about 50-100hp with a small turbo.. bigger turbos would giv u a greater hp gain of course but most likely between 1st and 4th gear u wont have any traction!!!

depends on what you want the engine to do

a turbo is for better top end and the higher rpms; a supercharger is for better low end off the start but it helps in the top end too so it would depend on how the engine handles now

either will give you more HP but I wouldn't do either to your car. Its almost 10 years old and putting the added stress and strain on a 10 year old engine is just asking for a blown engine. And since you mention not wanting to buy a new engine, you might just force yourself to with a turbo or blower... You might also realize that there are other things you can do to modify your car that will give you increased HP without putting more strain on the engine. You could start with free flowing exhaust system, add to it a performance air intake, put on undersized pulleys... each one of those will give you more HP (more overall with the exhaust and intake and more at the wheels with the undersized pulleys). And none of those will put anymore strain on your engine. And considering you sound like your on a budget... consider that the exhaust, intake and pulleys will cost less than even your cheapest turbo or blower.
