Is this true??? Question about RESUME'S for a current "Stay-at-home-Mom" ! --?
-
I heard that if you haven't been working for 1 + years (closer to 2), you have to wipe your resume clean and start it over. As in clear your work history from before you stopped working and start all over again from a blank slate (or at least keeping only your 1 or 2 most recent jobs on the resume). Is that true? If I haven't worked for a long time, do I have to clear my resume and start all over again? I hope my question makes sense. I ask because I would like to start working again at some sort of part-time job soon. I haven't worked since September 2010 when I was ordered to cease and go on bed-rest during my pregnancy, and I haven't worked anywhere since. My previous work history certainly isn't anything admirable, but I'm only 22 yrs old and don't exactly have a lot to put on the list, anyway. I'd feel pretty pathetic if I had to hand in a resume with no previous work experience listed at my age if I don't have too, if you know what I mean. So, again, if I want to start working again, am I going to have to wipe my slate (resume) clean, say I've been off work and a stay at home Mom since Oct 30th, 2010 and just go from there? See what happens?.... Your help/experiences/advice in this matter would be GREATLY appreciated. THANK YOU! x

Answer:
You still put in your previous work experience. Employers do frown on being out of the workplace for a couple of years, so you may not get as good a job as you would have 2 years ago, but your previous experience is still relevant.

Most employers are interested primarily in the past 2 years of work experience. These days, a resume of more than 1 page is too much for an employer to bother with, so most people only list their past couple of years' worth of experience. However, just because you've stayed at home with your child doesn't mean that your former experience isn't worth anything. Employers will want to know why you haven't worked in that time, and staying at home with a child is plenty of reason to have been off the job market in that time (as opposed to being in jail or living on the streets because you're a drug dealer). So just remember that you need to keep a resume short, and that you don't have to list all of your work experience forever. Just list the job or two you had prior to staying at home with your child.

I just don't understand how one could possibly wipe everything and start over only listing past 2 yrs, while have not even been working in the past 2 yrs? I mean what will be listed?? Sorry your question doesn't make sense to me...
