Should i buy a 2002 Lincoln LS for my first car or is it not reliable?
-
Im 15 and have to buy my own car. i have about 7500 dollars saved up by the time im 16..so ill be looking for an 2002 ls around that price range and im guessing it'll have around 90,000 miles. i want a 2002 exactly bc previous years apparently had recalls on some parts. now i love the way the LS looks, the v8, comfy interior, most of all how i can afford it but what im a little worried about is buying a ford. i don't have the extra money to be replacing a whole bunch of parts that go out. so is the lincoln ls reliable enough for me to buy or should i look into buying another car btw i know all the Japanese cars are reliable i just like how the LS is a v8 and rwd and also dont suggest a mustang..camaro..etc bc of insurance being so high on those

Answer:
i've been a ford lincoln mercury tech for 20 years and i also like the LS. pretty reliable, nice looking, plenty of power. here is what i have found to be the most reoccurring problems found with the LS. The valve covers leak and will allow oil to leak outside the engine and also into the spark plug areas which cause an engine misfire. have a mechanic check for this before buying vehicle. the ignition coils sometimes go bad when this happens. the coils also can go bad if spark plug boots are worn. get as many maintenance receipts from previous owner as possible to see if tune up done. when you drive it, if the steering wheel shakes when you brake the front rotors are warped. if you have to replace any coils use ford parts, aftermarket coils seem to be of lower quality. The sensor/solenoid on the hydraulic fan pump sometimes fails. if engine starts to overheat have it checked immediately. i have had to replace the solenoid valve body in transmission a couple of times but have only overhauled 1 transmission in the LS. very few engine concerns other than valve cover gaskets. Before you buy the vehicle have it inspected by a lincoln tech or a qualified tech with experience with the LS. you may be able to negotiate the cost of this inspection with the seller. have them check brakes, tires, valve cover gaskets, coolant quality, leaks etc... as anything wrong with the car will come out of your pocket later. do this with any car you buy! also since you're 15 (16) take someone older (no offense) Dad, Uncle etc.. with you so you dont get taken advantage of. Think before you buy, look at several vehicles, dont make a rash decision like buying it because you like the stereo or its got cool wheels and overlook things like worn tires or brakes. i hope this helps. i would buy an LS if it was in good shape and well maintained.

They were good cars. Fairly powerful, nice looking, good handling, and comfortable. Just so you know almost every car has a recall on something. You simply cant put together a million or so parts 200k times without having something go wrong. It just meant there was a problem which was found and then fixed for free. TSB's are similar to recalls except they don't have to send out a letter telling you that something on your car is unsafe. The 2002 LS has 106 of them and once again it would be fixed for free if they apply to your car. Its also a myth than anything Japanese is automatically reliable. Mitsubishi for example makes some terrible cars (ignoring the Evo's) and has been caught hiding major safety issues many times.

Buy a Honda. That way you will be able to afford to put gas into it and pay for the insurance. ..
