What are AWD sports cars?

Lexus is250, 2JZ, AWD stick/manual conversion possible?....asking tuners.?

  • Asking tuners, they know where I'm headed. I don't want to hear it from you people who know squat about cars. So if you don't tune cars...please move on. I'm looking to do something different. Luxury&sports in one. So I'm looking to start a project, not looking to spend more than 20,000 for the total project (EXcluding price of car). I like the body of the Lexus is250 and every part of the body looks beautiful to me...obviously for what I'm doing, there's no need to spend more money to get a is350. - The is250 only offers manual in RWD, sure RWD is nice for some people, and probably wouldn't be a probably to me either, BUT... - I would like to have a AWD...but that is only offered in automatic. - So I'm thinking about swapping in a 2JZ engine which I'd probably tare to shreds and rebuild anyways and possibly boost. Now who would of thought of that? Luxury&sports car in one. Would it go over the 20K price limit? Keep in mind I'll be doing all the work with me and my team. I know it's not a plug and play situation with the ECU and harness, so I know there will be some re-wiring done. I just need to know what things to consider before starting the project. I don't want to drop money on something that will sit the garage because the project couldn't be completed....that would be a waste of a car. We work on cars and do swaps all day, but we've never converted a car from automatic to stick/manual...so I was considering how hard that would be to do?.. - AWD stick/manual with a 2JZ....now that's something different. I know a RWD 2JZ would probably be easier to do, but how much harder would automatic - stick conversion be? and will a engine that pushes a RWD car be even suitable for a car with a AWD drive train? ..and no don't tell me to get a sti or a evo, we already got too many of those in the team. We don't need any more of those.

  • Answer:

it will come out to around 20k. I would estimate the tranny conversion alone will be around 5k. Boost around 3.5k and depending on what you do to everything else will probably fill the remainder of your budget. however I think you should totally go for it, there are wayy to many STI and Evos out there, and always at track days! this would be amazing in that it will be unique, and wonderfully quick. I am pretty sure the conversion will be more difficult then anything you have done so far as far as I can tell from reading this. I wouldnt reccomend doing it yourself unless you have a work garage and major training. A tuning shop could do it for you but will probably add over a grand in labor costs alone. It would entail swapping out the tranny (duh) and of course making sure that fits with the powertrain etc. Installation of the clutch pedal, and changing of hte shifter etc. again, only attempt it if your are extremely confindent

It'll go significantly past your budget. It does sound like quite the intriguing project, and the concept of it would have excellent results. But luxury, it is not. It's just a Lexus. A nice looking one, but definitely not luxury. But there is a LOT of fabrication and modification involved. The parts themselves aren't so bad, it's getting everything to work together right, that would be.
