Should I buy a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo or 2002 Mazda Tribute?

Can you put a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L into a 2002?

  • Well my 4.0L in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Motor just went out and it had a 4.0L in it. Now my question is.....I found a guy who has a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Engine that also is a 4.0L, now can I put that in my 2002 Jeep? What will I have to change? Please people serious answers from the ones who know. I have noticed 4.0L are very in demand. I could get a great deal on this motor too.

  • Answer:

You will need to have the same year or newer motor to be able to get it inspected in most states.

Unfortunately you can't put an older motor in a newer vehicle if your state requires emissions testing. Aside from that, a '94 motor is different than an '02 motor. It should bolt right in but the wiring is different. You would need all the sensors off your '02 and your fuel mapping would be off. The newer manifolds and heads flow much better. Your best bet would be to find a wrecked cherokee closer to the year of yours.

Chrysler made allot of changes to the 4.0 in 1999 & 2000. Your best bet would be to find a 2000 or newer 4.0. The cost should be between $500.00 and $1000.00 depending on mileage and warranty. TOM
